Do you want your students to not only be able to factor trinomials, but also understand why it works? That's what I do when I first introduce factoring trinomials (a=1) with this lesson. The prerequisite skill needed by the students is multiplying polynomials.
A few years ago while lesson planning I couldn't figure out why my students thought factoring trinomials was boring. I LOVED those problems, they're like a puzzle. That's when it hit me....the students can create their own puzzles for their classmates to solve and this lesson plan was born.
This lesson plan will walk you through how to introduce the topic, get the students up and working together, a discovery lesson discussion, and formative assessment.
In addition to these lesson plans, you will need an index card for each student.
