I decided that the best way to teach students how to factor trinomials is
to TRICK THEM!!
All I told my students before beginning this important factoring lesson was, “Today let’s switch gears and just do some fun puzzles!” (insert cheering)
We did the first 5 puzzles together.
The only rule to the puzzle is to fill in the two numbers that multiply together to get the top number, but add together to get the bottom number. Then I let them work on the rest of the page and told them that whoever got the most correct at the end of the period would win a prize.
The next day, I told them that I tricked them into learning an important skill in factoring. I then showed them how these puzzles can quickly translate into factoring trinomials.
