Whack-a-Factor is an activity that helps students become more fluent in identifying factors of numbers while adding an element of strategic play. Engage learners with this activity in small groups or as part of a math center. This activity can help to address/review CCSS 4.OA.4: gain familiarity with factors and multiples.
There are two different versions of the gameboard. One set focuses on common factors 1 – 10 (gopher with the yellow hat); the other set focuses on factors that go beyond 1-10, like 11, 12, 15, and 20 (gopher with the green hat). There are four different gameboards for each set so that there is some variety. Some gameboards do have repeated factors on them. A blank gameboard also is included for students to add factors based on their own readiness levels. A divisibility chart is included as well.
The nature of this game allows students to play several rounds using the same gameboard. The outcome of the game relies on what number cards are pulled and the strategy behind which factors get “whacked.” Will the students be able to “whack” all the factors before they get “whacked” out of the game? Game on!
This activity can be used with fourth grade students, as well as fifth and sixth grade students who may need to develop proficiency in identifying factors of numbers.
