In this lab, students will explore three different factors that can impact solubility, temperature, surface area, and stirring. Students are asked to write hypotheses, fill in data tables, and write conclusions for each factor., leading to a deeper understanding of how dissolving works and what makes a substance dissolve faster. This lab also asks students to practice lab skills, including measuring with a graduated cylinder and using a stopwatch.
The lab is broken into three parts, one for each factor. You can set this up in stations around the room, or do one part at a time. My students are able to complete all three parts within one hour long class period.
There are two different versions of the lab included in the PDF document. The first version is what I use to set up stations, and includes a two page student worksheet and separate pages with the directions for each station. The second version is a three page student document that includes the directions for each part on the handout.
