For too long, students have had a skewed or misunderstood understanding of Native American culture. With this resource, your student will be much more knowledgeable about an entire culture!
FEATURES
• Four leveled reading passages on often misunderstood topics in Native American culture: Native Americans today, Headdresses and Eagle Feathers, Native American homes, and Buffalo (among other issues).
• Defines and provides examples of facts, myths, and stereotypes.
• Each passage comes with discussion questions and open response questions to promote further discussion.
• Pre-assessment and Assessment activities.
• Role playing activity: Students are given a statement by a fictional student who has a misunderstanding of Native American culture. Students must create a response to correct that students understanding.
• Essay question prompt: Students will get the chance to demonstrate how their understanding and perception of Native Americans has changed throughout the unit.
• Answer sheet included.
• Created by NATIVE American Teacher born and raised on reservation.
By the end of this unit, students will understand:
• Not all Native Americans lived in tipis.
• The importance of the tipi and its many benefits for Plains peoples.
• Cultural differences amongst tribes nationwide.
• The significance of the headdress and eagle feather and why they should be respected.
• How Native Americans dress, live, and keep their culture alive today.
• And many other facts about Native peoples!
