This activity corresponds with both social studies/history and language arts and can be used as a cross curricular lesson! This lesson is designed to get students thinking about what is a fact and what is an opinion.
Included is a graphic organizer that students will record the definitions of facts vs. opinions and later to record facts and record opinions found in an article about George Washington. An article about George Washington is included. There is also a fact and opinion page with simple facts and opinions listed to be displayed on a smart board to get the conversation started. Also included is a summary page, if you wish to go one step further and have students summarize the article, using facts they found and recorded on their graphic organizer. This last step can be left out for students that may struggle, or for students in earlier grade levels.
