This download explores the similarities between Ray Bradbury's novel Fahrenheit 451 and Neil Postman's 1998 speech on technological change. This download offers two activity options.
The students will begin by summarizing each of Neil Postman's five ideas on technological change. They will then use the SOAPStone method of analysis to explore and analyze his speech. Once they have a firm understanding of his ideas and claims, they will compare Postman's views on technological change to Bradbury's in a mini-writing assignment. This activity includes an answer key.
The students will fill out a chart that asks them to examine the similarities between the two pieces. One column asks them to summarize each of Neil Postman's main ideas. The second column asks students to explore Bradbury's novel and find examples that would support Postman's ideas.
This activity typically generates a lot of discussions about technology and the novel! Happy teaching!
