This unit is designed to build on key questions and concepts developed in previous Developing Core Proficiencies units that asked students to read and dissect several texts dealing with the theme of education. During this unit, students will a variety of non-fiction texts in conjunction with Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451; they will build their critical thinking, reading, writing and teamwork skills by conducting close readings, and by participating in a number of cooperative-learning activities and writing workshops. This unit also includes fewer teacher-generated questions as the lessons progress with the idea that students will be the ones held responsible for creating text-based questions and leading discussions. However, teachers will continue to play the role of facilitator, and should keep students focused on the unit's guiding questions and central objectives.
