I live by requiring detailed notes for books we read as a class. They should show their thoughts, try to do close reading, and provide details they notice. It basically requires that they use reading strategies and do the thinking work they probably would not do otherwise.
Here is what I require of them: Notes must include story, thoughts, questions, text connections, inferences, and summaries at the end of each chapter. They will be used during discussions, quizzes, and the test. Notes should be taken every page or every other page. It is necessary to include some page numbers (enough to easily go back to what you noted). I tend to stamp them when due and break up the due dates so that they realize they should start taking notes before they all come due. For Fahrenheit I break them up into the three sections and collect all at the end.
