Each year in my AMAZING city we have our Royal National Show, or as we like to call it the Ekka (short for Exhibition). Many teachers each year put themselves through a great deal of organization and stress to take their classes on this excursion.
While the Ekka does provide some teaching materials they are often not 100% relevant to the year level that they are taking, especially if that year level is in the lower school. This pack is mainly aimed at Prep - 2, but could also be used for Upper school for data collection that will be used then back at school.
While this pack will be based on events and displays at the Ekka, I am sure it will also be 100% relevant to any other show around Australia or for that matter around the world.
Items in this pack include worksheets for Beef Cattle, Dairy Cattle, Pigs, Sheep, Horses, Fruits and Vegetables, Poultry, other exhibits the children may see, and general information about the show. This pack is meant to be interactive, therefore the children are required to talk to the owners of the livestock and ask them the questions that they need to answers too, such as the weight and height of the livestock, and the specific breeds. Several questions ask the children to ask the owners to write their answer down, as might have trouble doing this, but also to have the children interacting with the owners.
On a previous excursions to the Ekka, I have always made sure the children have spoken to the farmers about their livestock. the children have found this an interesting experience and I feel they have learnt more from that one interaction than a whole day of just wondering around. It may even earn them some special experiences that other children might not get!
