I often hear children say the words, “That’s not fair.” But what does fairness really mean? Most children and even adults think of fairness as meaning equal, but that isn’t really what it means. Fairness is everyone getting what they need to be successful.
My oldest son often says, it’s not fair that he has to do more chores than his younger brother who also has exceptional needs. I simply ask him if he thinks his brother would be successful at accomplishing the same amount of chores as he does. He agrees that he is not capable. I also remind him of all the privileges he receives that his brother does not. This really helps to put things into perspective for him.
