These sweet fairy tale birds are inspired by Lucy Cousins’ illustrations in Yummy: Eight Favorite Fairy Tales. Here we find favorite characters like The Little Red Hen, Ducky Daddles, Turkey Lurkey, Goosey Poosey, and Henny Penny. The bold primary colors, simple drawings, and black outlines make this book a great inspiration for kids’ paintings in tempera. “This is a book that will make you want to paint,” said The New York Times in its review of the book. My kids agree!
We read “Henny Penny,” one of the stories in the book, and then do a step-by-step drawing of a fairy tale bird. The children can make their bird a hen or rooster, duck, turkey, or goose. Then they have fun with the accessories. Does your bird wear a top hat or rain boots? A pearl necklace or a bow? What else could a fairy tale bird wear? Next is painting in liquid tempera, the perfect paint for this project and my favorite art supply with young children.
Time Required: 45-60 minutes.
