These fairy tale royals are a big hit with my students. This class was all girls and they all painted princesses. But included in the project are samples for kings and princes as well!
Taking inspiration from artist and author Tomie dePaola, we draw a prince or princess together. We look at his illustrations of fairy tales that feature bold colors, simply drawn faces, and figures with a soft outline. The kids really have fun with these! One child painted Rapunzel, another painted her princess as herself, and a third created a princess from a story she imagined. This project includes directions for getting the proportions of the head and body correct and provides the opportunity to get creative with the crowns, hair, and clothes.
Time Required: 60-90 minutes.
