Product Description
This unit is a student favorite! It has three parts that allow students to learn about and explore common fairy tale elements, fractured fairy tales, and the lost art of storytelling.

Part 1: Fairy Tale Elements
The goal of this lesson is to first expose students to a wide variety of “original” fairy tales, and then help them identify common fairy tale elements within these timeless stories. Activity extension included!

Part 2: Fractured Fairy Tales
The goal of this lesson is to show students how character point of view can change stories dramatically. In this activity, students will compare and contrast original fairy tales to their fractured fairy tale counterparts. Who would have thought the big, bad wolf was only sneezing due to a cold! He was never trying to blow those houses down . . . !

Part 3: Storytelling Activity
The goal of this week-long project is for students to explore the lost art of storytelling. Not only will students use creativity and their new knowledge of fairy tale elements to author an original and exciting fractured fairy tale, but they will also learn to use expressive voices to tell their story to fellow classmates. Rubric included!

After teaching this fairy tale unit, I read Disney’s new Beauty and the Beast novelization by Elizabeth Rudnick. It’s a fantastically written story, and my students loved reading it! Check out my novel unit here:
