This activity has been designed to enhance student understanding of characters as reality or fantasy through practicing the skills of classifying and categorizing. It can be used as both a direct instruction activity or as skill practice at a literacy station or reading center.
The purchased document contains cards with corresponding characters on the second and third pages of the document. The first page of the document contains a set (shown duplicated on one sheet) of character words to be sorted into the appropriate categories. The purchased document will contain all twelve reality or fantasy characters available for student work.
I have found this to be successful when used as follow-up at a comprehension station. Pages within the document contain printable cards for all of the activity content. These can be cut and used by each student or printed on cardstock, cut and laminated, and used cooperatively by a small group prior to the student independently completing assignment page. For added rigor, students are to list three additional characters of their own for both categories. I have also used this activity to springboard into a fairy tale writing activity.
