The file contains a list of fairy tales organized by Aarne-Thompson-Uther type and identified by culture of origin. This list contains hyperlinks to each story online.
The file also contains two different comparison charts and a guide for creating a children's book at the end.
Students begin by reading this article: https://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/aarne-thompson-uther-tale-type-index-fables-fairy-tales and discussing common themes/elements of folklore.
Then break students into groups and assign each group to read a different story from the same type (see the list). Students identify the essential details of this story on the page titled Folklore Comparison Chart., then share out the details of their specific story. Then the class discusses the similarities that persist across cultures.
Each student then chooses a different ATU type to focus on for their children's book and 3 specific stories from different cultures to read/compare on the remaining chart. Once students identify the essential pieces of their chosen tale type, they write their own version of the tale and create a children's book.
