Guide your students through the writing process as they create an imaginative piece or fairytale. Begin with putting students into groups and giving each group a fairytale to analyze. The group activity instills awareness of the fairytale elements that students must include in their own story. On chart paper, have groups illustrate and present their findings to the class. Take a group project grade or a daily grade. Then, students plan their draft with a prewriting organizer. I usually demonstrate the task for lower students. The fairytale can be written solo or with a pair of students. Take two major grades (a project grade and a presentation grade). Save yourself time. Use the rubric to grade most parts while students are presenting. Your audience of students are busy writing about their peers' stories as the stories are presented. The audience is encouraged to ask their peer presenters questions--this helps you clarify completed pieces as you use the rubric to grade the presentations.
