These math mat activities strengthen addition and subtraction relationships while addressing standards 1.OA.A.1, and 1.OA.A.2. They work well during small group instruction or independent practice. You could also use them as a quick formative assessment following instruction.
Use the appropriate number family mat and allow students to sort out all of the appropriate cards for their number family. Once the cards have been sorted, mix them up. Use just one of the mats at a time, either the addition mat or the subtraction mat.
Keep the pace moving with this activity. Place a card face up in the first blank space. Have the group chant the entire problem, verbally filling in the missing number, while you point to each space.
Continue with this same mat flipping over the next card and continuing the chanting. Occasionally you may want to have individuals chant so you can check their progress.
