What Is It?

Each Independent Learning Module (ILM) merges digital content with engaging activities. The specially designed website houses texts, presentations, and learning links. It was designed to keep high fourth grade students and all fifth grade students working independently.

How Can I Use It?

• Online Fun for All - The September ILM provides eight fun, meaningful lessons. You can use them individually, assign them over the course of the month, enjoy a full day of online learning, or however you’d like!

• I’m Done, Now What? - Let the independent projects provide anchor activities for early finishers or enrichment material for gifted and talented learners.

• Five Minutes Peace (and More!) - Are you behind on grading? Do you need to meet with individual students or small groups? The independent learning module will keep your students busy for hours.

• Sub Plans - For a full day (or two) of sub plans, just leave the ILM! Kids will learn, work independently, and have fun.

• Homeschool (or Learn at Home) - Hey, parents! This is a great way to enhance your homeschool curriculum. It’s also fantastic for kids who go to school but need some extra enrichment at home.

What’s Included?

This month’s module includes activities for eight subjects. Each activity relates to fall foliage and trees.

Informational Text – Exploring Cause and Effect in Text

• ILM Online - Students read a cause-effect article on the colors in leaves.

• ILM Packet - They fill in missing causes and effects in a table.

.

Language – Analyzing Figurative Language

• ILM Online – Kids watch a video that explores seven types of figurative language: alliteration, assonance, simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia, and hyperbole.

• ILM Packet – First, they define and provide an example for each type of figurative language in the video. Then they use figurative language to describe several trees.

Listening – Examining Claims and Evidence

• ILM Online – A three-minute video explains why evergreens keep their leaves and why leaves of deciduous trees change color.

• ILM Packet – Students examine two claims made by the presenter and provide evidence he provided for each.

Literature – Investigating Imagery

• ILM Online - Students watch a short video on imagery. They read “September,” a poem by Helen Hunt Jackson. Children can also click to view photos of less-known plants named in the poem (goldenrod, gentian, milkweed, and aster).

• ILM Packet - Students draw the picture painted by the poem. They circle specific words used by the poet that helped them draw it. Then they name another sense affected by the poem and provide a specific example.

Math – Using Factor Trees

• ILM Online - A video teaches kids to use a factor tree to find the prime factorization of a number.

• ILM Packet - Students create factor trees to find prime factorization of six numbers.

Science – Using Chromatography to Separate Pigments in Leaves

• ILM Online – Students watch a video that explores and experiments with three types of leaf pigment: chlorophyll (green), carotene (orange/red), and xanthophyll (yellow).

• ILM Packet – Kids answer questions as they watch the video.

Social Studies – Mapping Changes in Fall Foliage

• ILM Online - Students view two different elevation maps to consider how elevation, latitude, and bodies of water affect fall foliage.

• ILM Packet - Kids color a fall foliage map using a checklist of states and dates. They then look for patterns with elevation maps on the website.

Writing – Personifying a Tree

• ILM Online - Kids learn about personification and watch two film clips.

• ILM Packet - (1) Given lists of human body parts and actions, they list corresponding tree parts and actions. (2) Students choose a specific tree to personify and plan. (3) They personify the tree in a story.

What Standards Are Covered?

• Informational Text – identifying cause and effect

• Language – analyzing figurative language

• Listening – identifying evidence for claims made in a presentation

• Literature – exploring imagery in poetry

• Math – finding prime factorization with factor trees

• Science - understanding the role of photosynthesis and chlorophyll in leaf color
