Acorn Rhymes – a differentiated rhyme activity
Version 1: Students choose an acorn card with two acorns and pictures on them. They must identify the pictures and determine if they rhyme or do not rhyme. Then they use the number on the card to find the matching acorns on the recording sheet. If the pictures on the card rhyme, they color the happy acorn, if they do not rhyme, they color the sad acorn.
Version 2: Students match acorn tops to bottoms by words that rhyme. Once they have matched the tops and bottoms together, they find the picture from the acorn bottom on the recording sheet and write the number in the box from the acorn top.
Fall Sort – a differentiated print type sort.
RF.K.1b, RF.K.1c, RF.K.1d
Version 1: Students sort the print cards by type: letter, word, or sentence. After sorting the cards, students color the matching picture from the card on the recording sheet. The recording sheet has a color code, one color for each print type.
Version 2: This is a modified version of the first. Students only sort two print types: letters and words. The recording sheet works the same way as version 1.
Pumpkin Letters – a differentiated letter and sound activity.
Version 1: Students match the beginning sound on a picture card to the letter on a wagon card. Then students use the recording sheet to find the letter in a pumpkin and color the pumpkin.
Version 2: Students match the uppercase wagon card with the lowercase letter card. Then students use the recording sheet to find the letter in a pumpkin and color the pumpkin.
Sight Word Birds – sight word activity
**NOTE: This is not differentiated, however I have provided two versions of a recording sheet for students to trace words or write them independently. I have also provided a blank set of spinners so you can use the sight words that work best for your students.**
Students use a paper clip and pencil to spin a sight word on a bird spinner. They read the word and then write or trace it in a bird sign on the recording sheet.
Syllables Leaves – a differentiated syllable activity
Version 1: Students sort picture cards according to how many syllables they have: 1, 2, or 3. They arrange them on the floor, table, or in a pocket chart below the bags of leave signs for 1, 2, or 3 syllables. After sorting the pictures, the students match the letter on the card to a box on the recording sheet. Then they color the number of leaves in the box as there are syllables.
Version 2: Students choose an leaf card, say the picture, and clap the syllables. They may use a clothespin, or just pinch with their fingers, to identify the number of syllables at the bottom of the card. Once the student knows how many syllables there are, they use the letter on the card to find the matching leaves on the recording sheet. They color the number of leaves as there are syllables.
