Fall ELA Interactive Notebook for Second Grade
I created this pack to supplement your ELA curriculum for the Fall. Twenty-three different activities are included, with sample photographs for students to see the final product. Some of the activities are open ended and can be used with any text. Please note, there are no answer keys for these activities.
The following activities and concepts are covered in this pack:
* Literary and Informational Passage-
Students read the passages and create and answer questions about the text.
Two different open ended activities for retelling. One focuses on plot elements (character, setting, problem, event, solution) and the other focuses on beginning, middle, end.
* Cause and Effect-
Students read a short passage and identify then cut and paste cause and effect relationships.
* Text Feature Hunt-
Students identify text features, record the page number, and record what they learned using the feature. This is an open ended activity that can be used with any informational text.
* Main Idea-
Students identify the main idea and three supporting details. This is an open ended activity and can be used with any text.
* Narrative Story Writing-
Writing planner with character, setting, beginning, middle and end for narrative writing.
* Sequencing and How to Writing-
Students sequence pictures of how to grow a pumpkin and then write about the pictures.
* Short and Long Vowels-
Students sort short and long vowel words.
* Vowel Teams-
Two different activities. In the first activity students sort words into ai, ee, ea, and oa vowel teams. In the second activity students read words with vowel teams and match it to the corresponding picture.
* Two Syllable, Long Vowel Words-
Students look at the picture and then match the picture to the two syllable, long vowel word.
Students sort words into 1, 2, and 3 syllables.
* Singular and Plural Nouns-
Students sort words into singular and plural nouns.
* Plural Nouns-
Students add endings to plural nouns and sort by rule.
* Irregular Plural Nouns-
Students read sentences and fill in the irregular plural noun when given the singular noun.
* Collective Nouns-
Students match the collective noun to the picture.
* Pronouns and Nouns-
Students sort words into pronouns and nouns.
* Pronouns and Reflexive Pronouns-
Students sort words into pronouns and reflexive pronouns.
* Nouns and Verbs-
Students sort words into nouns and verbs.
* Verb Tense-
Students sort words into past, present, and future verb tenses.
* Past Tense Verbs-
Students read sentences and fill in the past tense verb when given the present tense.
Common Core Standards Addressed
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.1-Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.5- Describe the overall structure of a story, including describing how the beginning introduces the story and the ending concludes the action.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RL.2.10- By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.1- Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.2- Identify the main topic of a multiparagraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.5- Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.2.10- By the end of year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3- Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.A- Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.B- Know spelling-sound correspondences for additional common vowel teams.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.2.3.C- Decode regularly spelled two-syllable words with long vowels.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.2- Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.2.3- Write narratives in which they recount a well-elaborated event or short sequence of events, include details to describe actions, thoughts, and feelings, use temporal words to signal event order, and provide a sense of closure.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1- Demonstrate command of the conventions of standard English grammar and usage when writing or speaking.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.A- Use collective nouns (e.g., group).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.B- Form and use frequently occurring irregular plural nouns (e.g., feet, children, teeth, mice, fish).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.C- Use reflexive pronouns (e.g., myself, ourselves).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.L.2.1.D- Form and use the past tense of frequently occurring irregular verbs (e.g., sat, hid, told).
