This activity is perfect for students learning to identify and write with linking verbs! Students are given the opportunity to briefly review linking verbs, see linking verbs in action, and then creatively describe a "Fall creature" using linking verbs. After writing their descriptive sentences, students may use the templates provided to illustrate and create the creature that they described. Students may unleash their imagination as they describe scarecrows, pumpkins, and turkeys that are unlike any we've ever seen! In the past, my students have created astoundingly awesome "punk rock" turkeys, "ballerina" jack-o-lanterns, and other wildly creative creatures that they were able to correctly describe using linking verbs. Your students will "appear" excited when this opportunity is presented to them and "become" masters of identifying and using linking verbs correctly in writing! In addition, several ideas for extending this activity are suggested.
*This lesson has been revised to include a new bonus page of more specific notes and examples (color coded and expanded!) to use during instruction and as a reference for students when writing and creating.
