Looking for nonfiction reading passages with a fall/autumn theme? This set of nonfiction passages, graphic organizers, and text structure lesson ideas will provide the perfect reading activities for fall!
Each passage is written in one of the five main text structures (description, cause and effect, problem and solution, compare and contrast, and sequence/chronological order) and comes with a matching graphic organizer that students can use to map the main ideas. There are also five reading comprehension questions to go with each reading passage.
I've included a text structure "cheat sheet" with definitions and cue words for each type of text structure, as well as two lesson ideas - one for a 2-3 day group project (great for practicing text structure reading skills and strategies) and one that can fill part of a class period each day for six days for a more in-depth look at each text structure.
Here's a summary of what's included:
- 6 original nonfiction articles
"Pumpkin Spice What?" (cause and effect)
"Eat, Play, Squash" (description)
"Apples, Apples, Everywhere" (description)
"A Chili History" (sequence/chronological order)
"Colorful Corn" (compare and contrast)
"How to Recycle a Pumpkin" (problem and solution)
- 3 pages of reading comprehension questions (one half-page per article)
- 5 graphic organizers (bubble map, sequence chart, two different flow charts, and Venn diagram)
- 1 page of lesson ideas
- 1 text structure "cheat sheet" that can be used for notes or whole-class review
Text structure can be a difficult reading skill to teach, since you have to read several full-length texts in order to get a real sense of how each one works. I've simplified the process for you by providing clear-cut examples of each one in engaging, autumn-themed articles - all in a simple, easy-to-implement format. I hope your students enjoy learning fun facts about fall foods while they practice nonfiction reading skills!
Answer keys are included for reading questions and graphic organizers.
