Assignment asks students to write a poem using the fall season as their “base layer.” The poem should transcend mere descriptions of autumn. I give three different pre-writing strategies, and a detailed list of what needs to be in the poem. Also I have a little rubric they can rip off at the bottom of the page to staple to the front of their poem when they turn it in. Assignment asks for students to create synesthetic imagery. (See my available handout on this). I use this with 10-12 graders in a creative writing class, but it could easily be adapted for different ages/abilities. This original poem writing assignment culminates our Fall Poetry unit. See 80 slide PowerPoint and poetry packet with my notes also available.
