Comprehensive 80 slide PowerPoint. Students learn 27 poetic terms/literary devices through definition, example and close reading of selected fall poetry. (See packet of poems with my questions for analysis and my "key" packet with suggested responses also available). This PowerPoint contains lots of detail with definitions and examples from classic poetry. Video clips embedded explain the difference between tone and mood, for example. Special interesting section on synesthetic imagery--when you have students who are beyond simply learning or writing with strong images. Learn to combine the different types by creating synesthetic images. I have a little YouTube clip in here explaining this. Also I made a neat chart-like handout for practicing making your own (available). Throughout the term study in here, I explain things like the difference between personification and pathetic fallacy. I use this unit in my Creative Writing class, but it could be used in any course that aims to strengthen the students' poetry writing and close reading of poems. I do this unit in the fall and then in the winter, I have a similar winter poetry packet with a coordinating PowerPoint and the next 22 poetic terms I want them to learn. Autumn Poem assignment handout also available.
