This unit contains activities focused on Language Arts and Math. Each activity is aligned to Common Core Standards. The unit is full of activities created for my kindergarten classroom, but could be adapted for first grade.
These following is a list of activities included:
Pumpkin ABC –students arrange and write letters into alphabetical order.
Pumpkin Sort and Graph – students sort the pumpkin cards and then color one space on the graph for each pumpkin. After completing the graph, they compare each group/set, write the number for each, and determine which is greater/less.
Describing Pumpkins –Have students use their five senses to describe a pumpkin. They can use the “describing words” to write about their pumpkin.
Pumpkin Patch Beginning Sound Sort - students cut, sort, and glue words based on beginning sound.
Pumpkin Beginning and Ending Sounds –students write the beginning and ending sound for each.
• My Counting Pumpkins Number Book – Students will count the pumpkins on each page, write the number to show how many, and then show the number in different ways; the numeral, the number word, tallies, and shading in a ten frame.
Life Cycle of a Pumpkin – students cut out picture cards and glue them into order to demonstrate the life cycle of a pumpkin.
How To Make a Jack-o-lantern writing map – students write about the steps of making a Jack-o-lantern; first, next, and last
Pumpkin Roll and Color- students roll a die, and color pumpkins according to the die. They count the number of each color pumpkin, write the number to show how many, and identify the greatest and least number; as well as any that are equal.
Counting mats – use the pumpkin mats to count, represent numbers, compose and decompose numbers, or add/subtract.
Picking Pumpkins –Students choose a number; write the number in their pumpkin, and then use the number frame to show the number.
Pumpkin Seed Count - Students use the counting mats to demonstrate one to one correspondence; representing the numbers 1-20 using pumpkin seeds.
Comparing Sets –Students count the number of seeds in each pumpkin, write the number for each, and compare to see which is greatest and which is least.
