Subitizing is the ability to see small amount of objects and know how many there are without counting. It is a fundamental skill in a student's number sense development. It can be used to help teach counting on, composing and decomposing numbers and place value. Since subitizing is basically learning a prescribed pattern, students need to have mastery of subitizing to 5 first, before they go on to larger numbers. In my classroom, I use this slide show as a quick warm up to my math lesson. I show the slide quickly (about 2-3 seconds) and then leave up the "Show me the number” slide while they work on recalling how many pictures they saw.
