Students get excited when the seasons change, and they are interested in incorporating what they see in the world around them in their drawings. This step-by-step lesson plan includes an illustrated tutorial that educators can use to teach students how to draw a tree without any leaves. The instructions are very easy and break the tree down into multiple steps, which insures student success. The lesson also instructs how to change a simple drawing into a mixed media collage by attaching the autumn leaves with glue after the drawing is complete. Additionally, when students use red, orange, and yellow it helps reinforce their ability to categorize the warm colors.
This seasonal mixed-media lesson plan takes about two 40 minute class periods to complete. The PDF lesson plan is three pages long, and it aligns with the National Core Arts Anchor Standard: 2: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work. This easy to follow lesson plan is perfect to do in October for a themed art project that isn’t directly related to Halloween so all students will be able to participate regardless of what holidays they celebrate. It could also be done in November in anticipation of Thanksgiving too if the leaves are still changing colors and falling from the trees.
