Description

It's fall. Or maybe you prefer autumn. Sometimes Halloween and/or Thanksgiving just aren’t options in the classroom. While the rest of the world around you is going mad over witches or pilgrims, take a deep breath. Incorporating the seasons into your classes doesn’t just mark time going by. It can cultivate gratitude and provide a time to celebrate those moments that fly by.

I often wanted to acknowledge the seasons in my classes, but I couldn’t find resources that focused strictly on the seasons without mentioning holidays that were often inappropriate for one reason or another.

I created this for those times. No mention of Halloween or Thanksgiving is made. This is strictly fall. As I am from the United States, it is for fall in that geographical region. If you are not teaching in the United States, it can still work for you and your students as a fall cultural activity.

Fall Holidays/Festivals: Students name and describe holidays and festivals that occur in the fall as well as ask classmates from other cultures/countries about their fall holidays/festivals.

If You Had to Choose: Students choose one picture from each set as the activity they would prefer doing and write reasons.

  • Student Page

Spelling Quiz: Students write terms as they hear them. Next, they use the scrambled letters to determine if they have used all the correct letters and none of the letters that they shouldn’t in order to improve their chances of having the word/s spelled correctly.

  • Student Page + Teacher Page/Answer Key

Parts of Speech: Students read the given sentences and determine whether the underlined words are nouns, verbs, or adjectives.

  • Student Page + Answer Key

Fill in the Blank Challenge: Students use context clues to fill in the blanks with fall-related vocabulary.

  • Student Page + Answer Key

Syllables with Fall Vocabulary: Students will either listen to the teacher say the words and then write the number of syllables they hear or work together to determine how many syllables each term has. I’ve found that listening for syllables improved the pronunciation of many of my students. Depending on the region you are from, you may pronounce some of the words with a different number of syllables. Please examine the answer key before using it to make sure that it matches your own pronunciation. A little white-out and a pen can modify any difference.

  • Student Page + Answer Key

Matching Card Activity: Students will match each image to its term. This can be done as a solo activity or in groups. If you want your students to be up and moving around, tape either all the image cards or all the term cards on the classroom walls and have students use tape to match the corresponding card. In this case, you may wish to cut the cards in strips rather than completely apart to save time and tape them to the wall.
