This is a packet of 2nd grade writing activities with a fall season theme and a scarecrow craft that is perfect for an autumn bulletin board display. Students write a fall letter and poem, complete graphic organizers, respond to literature, complete booklets, etc. Second grade activities and topics include an autumn poem, scarecrow craft, pumpkins, apples, fall animals, and more! Use them for a writer’s workshop, at a thematic writing center, or for independent and guided writing practice.

The packet includes:

  • Fall KWL Chart - write what they know, want to learn, and have learned as students learn about the fall season.

  • Write a List! – draw pictures and write a list of fall writing ideas.

  • It’s Fall! Main Idea/Details – complete a graphic organizer by writing a main idea about fall and details to support it.

  • Learning About Fall – write, illustrate, and share information about the fall season.

  • Fall Web – complete a web graphic organizer with sentences and pictures that describe the main idea: “Fall is a season of changes.”

  • A Letter to Fall – write a letter to fall giving your opinion about fall and the reasons for your opinion.

  • A Fall Story – write and illustrate a fall story.

  • How many words can you make from the letters in scarecrow? - cut the letters out and use them to make words from the letters in “scarecrow.” Write the words in the spaces provided. Write sentences for 6 of the words.

  • Fall days are fun days! – write about and illustrate the fun activities you can do during the fall season.

  • Fall Colors – complete the sentences about the colors associated with the fall season.

  • Be a Fall Weather Forecaster – write and illustrate a week’s fall weather forecast. Students can research the week’s forecast in their area to write their descriptions.

  • What I Wear in Autumn – draw a picture to show what is worn during the fall months. Describe the fall clothing.

  • Writing About a Scarecrow – draw and write about a scarecrow.

  • Fall Holidays – draw and write about your favorite fall holiday.

  • Fall Sports – draw and write about your favorite fall sport.

  • A Trip to a Pumpkin Patch – draw and write about a trip to the pumpkin patch.

  • Scarecrow Craft – students cut the patterns out to make a scarecrow. Use it with scarecrow or fall writing to display on an autumn themed bulletin board.

  • How to Make a Caramel Apple Booklet – cut out and glue the pictures in order to show how to make a caramel apple. Write step-by-step directions for making a caramel apple (Word lists for student use are included).

  • Fall Nouns, Verbs, and Adjectives – write lists of nouns, verbs, and adjectives that describe the fall season.

  • An Autumn Season {acrostic} Poem - write phrases that describe autumn and begin with each of the letters in “Autumn Season.”

  • Compare and Contrast Apples and Pumpkins - complete the Venn diagram by drawing and writing what is the same and different about apples and pumpkins.

  • Funny Scarecrow – draw and describe a funny scarecrow.

  • Read a fall book. – write and illustrate a summary of a fall book. Evaluate the book.

  • Retell a fall story. – draw and write what happens at the beginning, middle, and end of a fall story.

  • Fall Story – complete the graphic organizer to answer questions about the structure of a fall story.

  • The Little Scarecrow Boy - complete a graphic organizer after reading Margaret Wise Brown’s book, The Little Scarecrow Boy. Students write about the structure, theme, and lesson learned from the story.

  • Autumn is Awesome– read the book, Awesome Autumn, by Bruce Goldstone. Answer the questions about the story.

  • Awesome Autumn Facts – Research information about autumn. Write 4 awesome facts about autumn.

  • All About Apples Booklet – complete an “All About Apples” booklet with the following pages: About Apples, Vocabulary, Growth, and What I Know.

  • How to Make Applesauce - draw and write about the steps needed to make applesauce.

  • Animals in Autumn – write and illustrate lists of animals associated with fall and spring.

  • Autumn Animals – research and write about 5 animals that are associated with autumn: squirrel, owl, fox, deer, and crow.

  • Animals that Migrate in Autumn- draw and write about animals that migrate in autumn.

  • Read to learn about owls. – read about owls. Complete the graphic organizer with information about owls.

  • An Owl Story – write and illustrate a make-believe story about an owl.

  • Owl Facts - write five facts about owls.

  • Fall Writing Paper – fall themed writing paper for open-ended fall writing activities.
