Fall of the Western Roman Empire: Is the US likely to Fall like Rome? debate

Will the United States meet the same fate as the Western Roman Empire
In my lesson plan on Ancient World History my students summative assessment will be a double inquiry in which they will compare the fall of the western roman empire to that of the potential fall of the united states and ultimately decide whether the US will meet the same fate as the Western Roman Empire.

The goal is for students to:
1) Choose and Defend one of the numerous theories as to why Western Roman Empire fell
a. Students will list reasons as to way many hegemonies fell and look for commonalities
b. Read two articles on information from many historians views as to why the Western Roman Empire fell; and share their articles with their peers (Level 4 listening, reading, speaking)
c. Students will then synthesize their notes / with that of their peers and choose which reason they believe to be the reason as to why the Western Roman Empire fell
d. In small groups students will use verbal skills to share and defend their reasoning
2) Compare with that of the United States
a. Based on the main reason the student believes why the Western Roman Empire fell, the student will research a similar issue relating to modern day America. This allows the student to read, make connections, and draw connections. (an example could be if students felt Rome fell due to Barbarian invasions; they could research American homeland terrorist attacks) (Reading Level 4)
b. Students will then that exerts from articles online comparing the United States issue to that of Western Roman Empire and talk to a peer; justifying whether or not they believe based on that article (s) whether the united States will fall based on their research, or whether they believe the United States will fight back (Level 4 reading and writing/ level 5)
3) Debate
a. Students will get in two large groups (The US will fall and the US will ot fall) and in their group discuss their main three topics for their point (level 4 listening and speaking)
b. Groups will debate / defend and prosecute their stance (while the other group is speaking they must take notes on who said what in order to counter their points (Listening)
4) Closure
a. Students will write one paragraph defending their stance on the issue; citing evidence from the debate and from their online sources (writing)
