"Fallen Angels" by W. D. Myers is an outstanding realistic depiction of the Vietnam war. The story is told through the eyes of Richie Perry, a young man who enlists in the military to escape his problems in Harlem. Once in Nam he comes to realize the war is more traumatic and terrible than the life he had attempted to escape. This is a straight forward telling of the horrors of war your mature readers will instantly engage in and want to finish. Many of my young readers related to this book as their dads, uncles or grandfathers were Vietnam vets so they were able to discuss the book with them. Some parents requested to read the book as well. Students realize the true meaning of courage from reading "Fallen Angels." Do know some of the events might be disturbing to some readers and the book includes language some might find offensive.
