This is definitely one of my favorite writing projects of the year! In my school, we complete this project with third graders near the beginning of the school year, but it can certainly be implemented at any point in the school year! It starts us off on the right foot and sets the stage for a great year of writing.
The brainstorming, planning, and publishing papers have the same layout for each family member, so students are easily able to make connections and gain an understanding about the writing process as they repeat the process with four or more family members.
The packet contains:
Brainstorming and Planning Papers for each of the following family members:
(Student Choice- perhaps an uncle, aunt, cousin, stepdad, etc.) This paper comes in handy for students who have non-traditional families or families with less than four members.
Furthermore, the packet also contains planning papers for each of the family members listed above. However, there are two choices for planners. Before beginning this writing unit, teachers need to decide which planner is most appropriate for their students.
Planner #1- These are designed for younger students, or students just being introduced to the writing process. Using this planner will result in shorter paragraphs, and is probably most appropriate for students in grades 1-3.
Planner #2- These are designed for older students who are proficient in the writing process. It easily results in a five paragraph paper with an introduction paragraph, three detail paragraphs, and a conclusion paragraph (with three or more sentences in each paragraph). It is probably most appropriate for students in grades 3-5.
This project also contains:
- complete directions and suggestions for classroom implementation
- sample planners that have been completed
- sample paragraphs written using the completed planners
- discussion of differentiating this project based on student needs
- implementation using the Writing Process
If you and your students enjoy this writing project, please come back and take a peek at some of the other writing projects that I have written for various times of the year.
