Description
Would you like to host a family reading/literacy night that your students, families, teachers, and principal will be talking about for days? How about a school-wide escape challenge? I created and used this at my school and it was a huge success.
When families enter the school, they’ll read the backstory of why they are “locked” in the school. Then they’ll be given a recording sheet according to the child’s grade level. The recording sheets are editable so you can enter your own text to let the families know where to go for each challenge. The challenges are similar to what you would have at a center or small group. Most of the challenges just need to be printed, laminated, and cut. But there are two that need props. One of the kindergarten challenges is “fishing for rhyming words.” I made fishing poles by attaching a string and magnets to a dowel rod. Fourth grade has to solve riddles that are written backward, so you’ll need some handheld mirrors. The completed challenges will lead them to a final code word that will free them from the school!
Fast escapers can do a challenge for another grade level if time allows. We didn’t time the students for the challenge, but it was 5 pm to 7 pm, so at 6:50, the principal announced that there were only 10 minutes left to escape. I’ve included an editable flyer to send home with students.
This can be done with or without boxes and locks. There are directions for doing it either way. I’ve included tips on how to make DIY lock boxes and a link to 4 letter word locks on Amazon.
