How did the sitcoms of the 1950s portray mothers, fathers, children? How does that compare to how modern sitcoms portray its family members? What does this say about societies expectations?
This product addresses these questions and more. Students will be asked to complete a grid comparing a sitcom from the 1950s like Leave it to Beaver vs a modern sitcom like The Middle.
This product leads to excellent and thought provoking dialog between students. Students are asked to reflect on gender roles in their own family and expectations for their future spouse and children.
Before buying this product, make sure that you have access to an episode of Leave it to Beaver and a modern sitcom that portray family life like The Middle.
Leave it to Beaver has been on and off of Netflix over the past few years, but individual episodes can be purchased on Amazon or the Google Play store.
The Middle has many of its episodes available for free on the ABC website or individual episodes (without commercials) can also be purchased. I have used Modern Family in the past, but using The Middle allows students to compare a nuclear family to a nuclear family.
