This is project that usually takes students a couple weeks to complete. It should be used in conjunction with a unit on genetics (dominant and recessive traits, punnett squares, heredity, etc). It requires students to brainstorm which traits they may have gotten from their parents, maternal grandparents, and paternal grandparents. Then, students create a poster with a family tree that starts with them, each level going down representing the next generation. Students will include a colorful background, pictures, names of relatives, and the names of the trait they think they received from each relative. Students will also write an essay that will tie in what they have learned about genetics to their personal traits and alleles. Time for collaboration and peer editing is highly recommend.
