Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, critic and editor best known for his imaginative storytelling that captured the imagination and interest of readers around the world. His tales of mystery and horror gave birth to the modern detective story. Many of Poe’s works, including “The Tell-Tale Heart” and “The Fall of the House of Usher,” and “The Raven” became literary classics.

Much of Poe’s life, is shrouded in mystery, and the lines between fact and fiction have been blurred substantially since his death. He never really knew his parents who were both involved in the theater and later was in constant conflict with John Allan who he went to live with following his parent’s death.

He was affected greatly by numerous family members who died at young ages, including his mother, his wife and his brother. Poe was overcome by grief following his wife’s death and although he continued to work, he suffered from poor health and struggled financially until his death in 1849.

At the time, it was said that Poe died of "congestion of the brain." But his actual cause of death has been the subject of endless speculation. Some experts believe that alcoholism led to his demise while others offer up alternative theories. Rabies, epilepsy and carbon monoxide poisoning are just some of the conditions thought to have led to the great writer's death.
