The most important information was taken directly from the VA state curriculum framework and includes an answer key! I would use this tool over the course of a few days as a note taking device for my students to learn basic facts about each famous American at the beginning of my unit. We would create the foldable the first day and then they would add to it the following days. Each page contains a picture of the famous American, a couple of Cloze sentences with the important facts that the students need to learn, and there is a “Turn and Talk” question everyday. This question is meant to get the students communicating and explaining the famous American’s contributions as well as helping them to make the connection between the facts about each person and how that person fought for our basic principles. On the back of the foldable, they can draw a picture of themselves and are then asked to make the connection of how they can help serve their community, state, and nation. I would use a famous American read aloud to introduce the famous American at the beginning of the lesson and then as a class we would complete the Cloze sentences.
