Albert Einstein was a German-born theoretical physicist who developed the general theory of relativity, one of the 2 pillars of modern physics. Einstein is best known in popular culture for his mass–energy equivalence formula E = mc².

He received the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics for his "services to theoretical physics", in particular his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect, a pivotal step in the evolution of quantum theory. Einstein's work is also known for its influence on the philosophy of science.

On April 17, 1955, while working on a speech to honor Israel's 7th anniversary, Einstein suffered an abdominal aortic aneurysm. He was taken to the University Medical Center at Princeton for treatment but refused surgery, believing that he had lived his life and was content to accept his fate. "I want to go when I want," he stated at the time. "It is tasteless to prolong life artificially. I have done my share, it is time to go. I will do it elegantly."

Einstein died at the university medical center early the next morning—April 18, 1955—at the age of 76.
