This cooperative learning lesson is a part of a unit for fourth grade social studies. This lesson focuses on building background and excitement using realia (real-life objects and primary resources) and website activities for the topic and the research component to find information on Famous Americans. This lesson plan was written using the SIOP method. The background for this lesson and ideas were adapted from lessons from successlink.org. The Jigsaw Structure, the cooperative learning component, developed by Dr. Spencer Kagan, will be used to guide the research portion of the project. Each team of students will be assigned one famous American and be given a research sheet. After completing the first round of research, the Jigsaw process can be repeated to include more famous Americans. The students would then have a “database” of researched famous Americans. For the language objective, the students are asked to use the proper verb tense when completing the research sheet. RESEARCH SHEET IS INCLUDED in the lesson plan.
