This is a 17 slide, highly animated, power point presentation on Famous Americans – Eli Whitney. Each of the slides are editable so you can modify the slides if you need to.
Eli Whitney was an American inventor who created 2 inventions that had an significant impact on the American economy. His 1st, was the cotton gin (gin being short for engine), a mechanical device that highly streamlined the process of extracting fiber from cotton seeds.
With the patent for his device being widely pirated, Whitney struggled to earn any compensation for his invention. His 2nd invention was a system to create an “interchangeable parts” systems of production that would drastically cut production costs.
When Whitney demonstrated his ‘cotton gin’ to his colleagues, they were stunned to witness the device that was able to clean more cotton in an hour than what could be produced by multiple workers in a day. The machine received immediate response. Local planters took to the widespread planting of green-seed cotton, immediately straining existing modes of production.
Later Whitney invented a system to mass produce guns my creating a system of interchangeable parts. Whitney is credited with pushing Congress to support weapons production and helping to propagate a manufacturing system that’s influenced modern assembly lines. His pursuits have often led him to be called “the father of American technology.”
