John Chapman, often called Johnny Appleseed, was an American pioneer nurseryman who introduced apple trees to large parts of Ontario, PA, OH, IN, IL, as well as the northern counties WV.
He became an American legend while still alive, due to his kind, generous ways, his leadership in conservation, and the symbolic importance he attributed to apples. He was also a missionary for The New Church and the inspiration for many museums and historical sites such as the Johnny Appleseed Museum in Urbana, OH and the Johnny Appleseed Heritage Center, near Lucas, and Mifflin, OH.
After his death, Chapman's image developed into the pioneer folk hero Johnny Appleseed. Johnny Appleseed festivals and statues dot the Northeastern and Midwestern United States to this day, and Appleseed is the official folk hero of MA.
The character has served as the focus of countless children's books, movies and stories since the Civil War period.
