This multi-genre research project is jam-packed with activities for your students to tackle independently as they learn research skills through a creative approach. This particular unit involved the study of famous immigrants in connection to a grade 6 MYP classroom; however, it can be tailored quite easily. This was a project that took two months in my own classroom, but, again, this is because of how I taught it and could be made shorter or longer, depending upon how you personally decide to spend your time with your students.
Students are provided choices throughout, which allows them to select the assignments that they are excited to complete while also providing YOU the information you need to know that your students are succeeding and understand how to research. The topic is also quite meaningful and allows students to explore in ways they may have never thought.
This project really allows teachers to play the role of facilitator, providing time for one-on-one check-ins with students. Instead of playing the 'sage on the stage' role, teachers are in a position to empower their students to think for themselves, be responsible for what they decide to tackle to showcase their understanding, and it's all through a creative approach that will really allow students to be EXCITED about the research process!
Students are provided a 'menu' of options to choose from in addition to a few mandatory selections. On a personal level, my students have LOVED the independence that this allows; there is something to be said for providing choices!
