This fits with Unit 1, Lesson 1 of the Spanish textbook Avancemos!, but it would work with any Spanish class. If you're studying other countries/cities, you could easily edit this assignment for the region you focus on.
Students must choose a famous Miamian, research their family's country of origin, their career, and something they like to do. They then present the information to the class entirely in Spanish. The file includes a listening sheet for audience members to complete, ensuring engagement and practicing listening skills. Also included is a performance rubric that can be either self-assessed or teacher-assessed.
I typically give kids 3-4 days in the computer lab to conduct their research and create a brief presentation, then we spend one day doing presentations and listening sheets.
I have used this project with 7th Grade Spanish I students within the first month of class, with success! The students were frustrated by the language requirements, but they were able to do it and the consensus at the end was that they really enjoyed it, which I think is a huge win :)
