Four page lab. Students discover that the vertical fall of an object is independent of the horizontial velocity. This is a fantastic lab that students love to do. They create a gun that shoots a pencil at a paper monkey. The set-up is such that the moment that the students release the pencil the monkey starts to fall and so does the pencil along its parabolic path. This sounds more dangerous than it is - however - face students in one direction to avoid a cross-fire situation. I did this many years ago - hopefully your pencil shooter does not violate your school's Zero Tolerance for Weapons and hopefully PETA and the ACLU does not hear about this lab. I also recommend playing Peter Gabriel's "Shock the Monkey" This lab is designed for middle school but with some changes you could use it at the HS level.
