This lesson will take 3-4 days if you incorporate all parts. It's a great introduction to tornadoes and hurricanes by researching some of the worst real disasters that have struck the U.S.
1) WEBQUEST - Students will choose 4 storms (2 tornadoes / 2 hurricanes) from the list of 20 and use the Internet to research various facts including: when/where did the storm strike, magnitude/duration, casualties/damage, and additional facts.
2) POWER POINT - The power point is a purely visual aide with pictures of each storm from the webquest. This is to be used during class discussion so as each storm is displayed students can share facts that they found.
3) VENN DIAGRAM / FOCUSED WRITING - I use these to conclude many lessons as it's a great way for students to display what they have retained from discussions and research. There are two Venn Diagram (hurricane/tornado) and two focused 5-minute writing papers.
4) PUZZLE PAGE - A tornado and hurricane vocabulary puzzle page is also included.
I have done this lesson for a number of years with our weather unit and students love it because it appeals to a wide range of learning styles in a quick amount of time. I hope you find it useful.
