This lesson features the painting "Tree of Hope, Remain Strong" by Frida Kahlo. Although it was originally designed as a sub plan, it can also be made part of any cultural unit you may be doing on art, Mexico, or health/wellness.
This culture lesson is ready to print & go, requires no technology, would not require a sub to produce any Spanish, and can be differentiated for any level of Spanish class.
Students will work step by step to interpret the art through a series of brainstorming, sorting and categorizing activities. Once they have recorded their own interpretation of the art, they will read a short excerpt that relates the piece of art to the life events of the artist herself.
This lesson is fully aligned with the ACTFL cultural competencies for foreign language learners and also can be used to address several of the culture themes found on the AP Spanish test.
