This classroom activity was conducted in a Sophomore English classroom, but because the teacher will be supplying the discussion questions, it could be used in any subject.
Imagine a dinner party where certain personalities emerge. There is the host, who is just trying to keep things going, the abstract thinker who can never just answer the question directly, and then there's the comedian, who makes everything a joke. This activity has five "roles" for students to assume and a description is given for each. While students are discussing the novel or subject being studied, they are playing the role of a dinner party guest. Students will complete a reflection as their ticket out the door to help guide instruction for the next time.
Sometimes we need to mix things up in the classroom and a Fancy Dinner Party discussion might just be the way to go! Optional: provide snacks and decorate your room to make it feel like a real dinner party with friends!
