The Fantastic Five is a researched based strategy for solving word problems in math. I have used it for the past two years and have had extreme growth in my students when learning how to understand and solve word problems. This unit has everything you need to get started using this strategy and more!
The strategy consists of 5 simple steps (get it - fantastic FIVE!).
*Strategy & Solve
*Echo the ?
*Does it make sense?
In this unit, each step includes a complete lesson plan, along with all of the papers needed to complete the lesson. Each lesson is broken down into the gradual release model (I do, we do, you do) and each section of the lesson has the papers needed.
The "Strategy & Solve" lesson includes 4 separate lessons, one for each strategy this unit focuses on:
*Draw a picture
*Guess & Check
*Make a List
*Find a Pattern
At the end of the unit (all 8 lessons), there are 3 fun games/activities for the students to play/do to help practice all of the steps together.
This unit truly has everything you will need to get your kids on track for solving word problems! Also included in the unit are:
*Pre/Post tests w/ a sample answer key
*Bookmarks for the kids to keep
The lessons are focused, simple, and engaging and take about 30 minutes a piece. That's 8 individual lessons and 3 extra games/activities - almost two weeks of lessons to kick off your problem solving unit!
