This color-coded chart is an excellent visual for students studying the fantasy genre (and can be easily adapted to all literature genres). Five archetypal roles are identified (Villain, Hero, Mentor, Sidekick and Innocent). For each role, a list of characteristics is included as well as examples of the archetypes seen in popular children's literature. This was an ongoing chart in my classroom and students received a copy for their notebooks as well. Another option is to have students fill in the chart in their notebooks as the unit progresses, maintaining the color coordinating and using characters from their own reading as examples.
